How We Farm Sustainably

To raise animals and produce poultry products, a healthy environment, clean air, and good soil are all necessary.

Sustainability in the poultry industry refers to maintaining and promoting the humane treatment of our most valuable resource – our livestock – as well as being good stewards of the land, water, and feed management.

The Finest, Sustainably Sourced
Ingredients Go Into Our Products

Klong Phai Farm makes sure that only premium-grade natural ingredients are used, both in the feed given to our animals, and those added to our range of ready-to-eat meals. This results in food that is not only full of nutritional benefits but also superior taste.

  • The choicest cuts, full of flavour – From classically flavoured juicy poultry to more intensely flavoured meats.
  • Great care goes into selecting our free-range produce only from farms where high standards of animal welfare are practised.
  • Free to roam and forage, our animals have a select diet, free from hormones and antibiotics, and are allowed more time to mature naturally.

Environment

All our animals roam pastures and eat grasses, weeds, bugs and worms as they are natural omnivores. Farmers switch the chickens to a fresh area of grass every few days to keep them eating the best greens and give the pastures time to recuperate. Because the business does not want to contaminate the shared waterways that we all utilize, we never use any pesticides or herbicides.

Additionally, the hens contribute by leaving behind the finest natural fertilizer known to man, eliminating the need for additional fertilization. We also provide the chickens supplemental feed that is entirely vegetarian, free of hormones and antibiotics and non-GMO feed.

Our Commitment

Klong Phai Farm is committing to work with our suppliers to achieve the standards of the Better Chicken Commitment for our Chicken. By 2029, it is required that 100% of our fresh, frozen, and processed Chicken, adhere to the following set of standards:

  • Implement a maximum stocking density of 30kg/m2 or less. Thinning is discouraged and if practiced must be limited to one thin per flock.
  • Adopt approved breeds that demonstrate higher welfare outcomes (breeds validated by the European Chicken Commitment Technical Working Group).
  • Meet improved environmental standards including:
    • At least 50 lux of light, including natural light.
    • At least two meters of usable perch space, and two pecking substrates, per 1000 birds.
    • On air quality, the concentration of ammonia must not exceed 20 ppm, and carbon dioxide must remain at 3000 ppm at the birds’ head level, regardless of density.
    • No cages or multi-tier systems.
  • Adopt controlled atmospheric stunning using inert gas or multi-phase systems, or effective electrical stunning without live inversion. See statement of intent regarding religious slaughter below.
  • Demonstrate compliance with the above standards via third-party auditing and annual public reporting on progress towards this commitment.

We are pleased to collaborate with Compassion in World Farming as we work together to support the implementation of the Better Chicken Commitment criteria.

Adoption of Humane Slaughter Systems for Chickens requiring a Reversible Stun: Statement of Intent

Electrical waterbath stunning is the main method used globally for the slaughter of poultry. There are, however, significant animal welfare concerns with this method and in 2012 the European Food Safety Authority called for an end to its use1 . Effective electric alternatives are yet to be developed. However, recognizing that under halal standards, Controlled Atmosphere Systems may not be accepted as the animal must not be dead at the time of slaughter (cutting), it is a bare minimum that a stunning method which renders the animal insensible to pain, but still alive, is developed and adopted as soon as possible. We agree to:

  • Actively press our suppliers and support the latest research projects to find alternatives to electrical water bath as a matter of urgency.
  • Support the call for the use of water bath stunning to be banned, and new, more humane systems for the effective electric stunning of poultry without conscious inversion to be developed and commercially available by no later than 1st January 2029.
  • Commit to adopting such a stunning method (without conscious inversion) as soon as it is commercially available.

We are committed that 100% of our fresh chicken will be compliant to the BCC by the 1st January 2029.
